Your help is needed to protect our seas. Ireland could potentially create the largest network of marine reserves in Europe.
Today, 23 May, Senator Grace O’Sullivan will put a motion before the Irish Senate (Seanad) calling for the protection of a significant amount of the territorial waters around Ireland with a network of urgently needed marine reserves. Show your support by signing the petition here.
Over 90% of Ireland’s territory is ocean. It is a rich marine environment yet just over 2% is partially protected now. Grace O’Sullivan’s call for a network of marine reserves is the perfect opportunity for Ireland to become a global conservation leader.
The evidence from around the world is that marine reserves increase the health of adjacent fish stocks and increase the ocean’s capacity to mitigate the effects of climate change.
The ocean is incredibly resilient: we just need to give it space and then it will give us the benefits. It is our duty to support this initiative. Sign the petition here.
