Swimmers turn out in their droves to take on the 13km swim across Galway Bay.
A pretty special day was had in Salthill last Saturday, 22 July, when 125 swimmers turned out to swim across Galway Bay for the 12th annual Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim.
Almost 800 supporters clambered on the rocks to cheer on the participants that were braving the waters in aid of Cancer Care West. Collectively, they managed to raise an incredible €100,000 for the charity.
The 13km swim is one of Ireland’s longest one-day swims, starting from Aughinish in Co. Clare and finishing at Blackrock Diving Tower in Salthill. First timers, returners, relay teams and soloists turned out in what was to be a “magical” and “emotional” day for all involved.
“The swim is one of our biggest fundraisers each year and every year it keeps getting better. Each swimmer, all the boat crew and just everyone who supports the swim have helped to fund our services and to help those affected by cancer.” said David O’Donnell Cancer Care West.
