Overall, the Ronhill Freedom Ultra is a fast, grounded, and confidence-inspiring shoe that rewards an efficient running style. I would recommend it to anyone who prefers a more connected feel to the trail and struggles with ankle stability in higher stacked shoes. Once you size up correctly, it’s a shoe that feels ready for adventure and ready to race.

Getting the Right Fit with the Freedom Ultra

It’s important to say right from the start that the Ronhill Freedom Ultra fits on the small side, so I would highly recommend going up at least half a size. Once you have the sizing right, this shoe really rewards you when you start moving. Out of the box, and even on an easy dog walk, the Freedom Ultra felt quite rigid and stiff underfoot. I wasn’t sure what to expect. But the moment I began running, the shoe came alive. It suddenly felt agile, balanced, and purpose-built for the trails.

The True Fit design and Matryx upper create a snug fit that holds the foot securely without any heel slippage. The heel cup in particular feels reassuringly solid, giving a real sense of stability on uneven ground. It’s one of those shoes that encourages confidence. You can push hard into corners, descend quickly, and it just stays with you. Comfort-wise, once you’re running, the stiffness transforms into structure. It’s not plush, but it’s precise. It’s the kind of feel I look for when I want to race fast and stay in control on technical terrain.

Running Performance and Feel on the Trails

Performance-wise, the Freedom Ultra feels incredibly natural. There’s a strong sense of connection to the ground. It feels low profile, responsive, and delivers that subtle feedback that’s often missing in more cushioned trail shoes. Coming from road running or softer trail shoes, the ride might feel firm at first, but for mountain running and technical routes, it’s ideal.

I tested it across a mix of Irish terrain, including rocky trails, forest paths, and wet mountain tracks, and it felt most at home on steeper, more rugged ground where foot placement and responsiveness really matter. The Michelin outsole deserves special mention. It grips well in the kind of mixed, often slippery conditions that Irish runners know all too well, from boggy trails to rocky climbs. It’s not an aggressive fell sole, but it strikes a great balance between traction and versatility. I would happily race in this shoe for anything up to around 30 kilometres on technical ground, and I could see it working just as well for fast-paced training runs in the mountains.

Freedom Ultra Durability and Build Quality

After several weeks of use, the durability has been excellent. There’s been no noticeable wear on the outsole or fraying on the upper. It feels like a shoe built to last, solid, dependable, and a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. In that sense, it reminds me a lot of the NNormal Kjerag, offering both race-day precision and long-term toughness.
