Electric bikes are one of the fastest-growing bike categories on the market right now and will only grow in popularity.

Since e-bikes hit the market many avid bike users have viewed them as a threat to the cycling culture in Ireland, but in reality, they are far from it. Electric bikes offer a new way of commuting, making them accessible to people of many ability levels and environmentally friendly.

What is an Electric Bike?

Orbea Optima E50 - GreenAer Electric Bike

An e-bike is a bicycle equipped with an electrical motor that can be used to increase the power output generated from your pedaling. You, as the bike rider, are free to choose the level of support given by the motor. The motor on an e-bike is there to assist you as you pedal, it does not propel the bike on its own.

E-bikes are suitable for everyone: the city commuter, the adventure lover, and the outdoor enthusiast. They are a cheaper alternative to driving or taking the bus and they also allow you to tackle those daunting hill cycles without the fear that you might not have the stamina to make it home.

There are so many different types of e-bikes available in Ireland including; e-cargo bikes, electric bikes for comfort and leisure, compact e-bikes, hybrid bikes, and e-mountain bikes. All of these are available on GreenAer.

“A good eBike will use a torque sensor to detect how much power you input at the pedals. It responds directly to this so that the more you put in, the more you get out. You choose how much you want the bike to assist you, and cycle just like a conventional bike” – GreenAer

Why buy an E-Bike?

There are so many reasons to buy an electric bike and some of them might surprise you.

1. Electric bikes are great exercise

Electric bikes can keep you fit. I know it sounds weird because you’re getting assistance from the electric motor, but in general, an e-bike will encourage you to ride your bike more, therefore keeping you fit.

They’re also fantastic for those of you who are starting your fitness journey and are a bit nervous about hopping on a standard pedal-powered bike. E-bikes will give you the confidence to exercise more without the fear of being too fatigued to make it home.

2. The battery life is constantly improving

Every year new technology is improving the battery life of electric bikes. This extra battery life means you can travel further and with more comfort. A lot of research is also going into chargers for these batteries to create faster charging.

3. E-bikes can allow you to explore the world

Many people have made the move to use electric bikes as their touring bikes. The electric motor of your bike can be used to help with the weight of any bags you might have with you allowing your legs a bit more time to recover.

4. They’re a great alternative to driving

Imagine cycling by all the cars stuck in gridlocked traffic and making it to work on time for once. That is one of the main advantages of buying an electric bike in Ireland.

An e-bike is effectively a motorised vehicle but you don’t need a licence for them and you’re still allowed to use the cycle lanes, how handy is that?

5. E-bikes can save you money

If you’re going to be using your new electric bike for commuting, it will save you a lot of money on running costs when switching over from a car or paying for public transport. Cars can be very expensive to run with insurance, petrol or diesel, tax, and just general maintenance. An e-bike is much cheaper, with the electricity it takes to charge the battery costing very little and only general bike maintenance to worry about after that.

6. They can motivate you to get out in nature

E-bikes will really motivate you to get out into nature and tackle trails that otherwise wouldn’t be feasible for most people on regular bikes. If you have to tackle a fairly steep hill an electric bike will give you that extra push to get up and over it.
