1. Avoid the crowds

If at all possible avoid skiing during the school holidays. If you are a teacher or have children and skiing during the holidays is your only option then look at your options over Easter which falls on 1 April 2018. We have seen the snow come later and later over the past few years so there is likely to be some nice snow, especially in the higher resorts around this time.

2. Beg, borrow but don’t steal

There is no need to look flash on the slopes. Borrow gear from friends and re-purpose gear that you already have such as insulated jackets and baselayers which will be perfectly adequate for skiing especially in the warmer months of spring.

3. Haggle hard

If you are buying gear for your ski holiday then don’t be afraid to ask for a discount. Many retailers will offer a 10% discount, especially if you are buying a number of items.

4. Dinners in aren’t always winners

Don’t opt for self-catering accommodation unless you are sure there is a moderately priced supermarket nearby. Convenience stores in many resorts are grossly overpriced so you will end up eating out every night and quickly undo your savvy savings that you made when you booked the holiday.

5. Better safe than sorry

Don’t forget to buy ski insurance. Resort doctors can be very expensive. It is also important to check if your policy covers off-piste skiing if you are planning to venture out of bounds on your holiday.

6. Pretty as a picnic

Plan the perfect picnic. Many restaurants on the mountain offer mediocre food at extortionate prices in overcrowded establishments. Bringing a packed lunch means that you will not only save money, you also have to freedom to stop for lunch whenever and wherever tickles your fancy.

7. Research, research, research

Research the cost of ski and boot hire before you go as some ski rental shops will offer a discount for purchasing online. If you have your own skis and boots check out the airline charges for your gear before you book your flight.
