Irish kayakers Jon Hynes (Cork) and Sean Cahill (Clare) will set off on 16 June to paddle around Ireland. The pair will leave from Kinsale, travelling clockwise and taking on the challenging West Coast first.
Speaking about the adventure, Jon stated, “It has been my dream for many years to kayak around Ireland… The record for this trip stands at 25 days and was set in 2011 by UK paddlers Jeff Allen and Harry Whelan. While we’re not focussed on the record and it’s not our primary aim, if we get a good weather window and we’re going well, we’ll have a crack at it.
Jon adds, “We have set up a website. The aim of the site is to keep people informed about what we’re doing but to also be a legacy project for anyone in the future who wants to paddle around Ireland. It will have details of the kit we’ve used and tips for how we handled training and different situations. It will also have a list of all of the people who have already completed this feat.”
A documentary will also be released about the expedition.
“It will be launched at the Irish Sea Kayaking Symposium in October 2015 and will include amazing Aircorps drone footage,” states Jon.
“CH Marine are our gold sponsors,” Jon adds. “They are clothing us from head to toe. Our gear includes the fabulous new Greenburg expedition sea kayaking buoyancy aid and Glacier cag jacket, as well as a host of other quality kayaking gear from Yak.”
The pair plans to camp our as much as possible but Jon says, “They won’t turn down a night in a bed or a nice hot shower if anyone offers them hospitality!”
