A shocking 30% of callouts the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team receive are as a result of inappropriate footwear, according to team member Fiona Kelly. With that in mind, we decided to test out a pair of walking shoes that Helly Hansen, the exclusive gear supplier to DWMRT, makes.

What do we use them for?
The Cascade from Helly Hansen is a Low-Top, waterproof, lightweight hiking shoe that is designed to be a performance hiking shoe. With that in mind, we use the Cascade as a trail shoe when we need some extra protection and support. The Cascade is really suited to walking on waymarked trails. Over the past few weeks with the Cascade, we have taken it along stretches of the Wicklow Way, the Dublin Mountains way, and the Western Way. We have also taken the Cascade off-trail on a hill walk up Binn Shleibhte in County Galway and although this sort of terrain is not the intended use, on a fine day it worked well.

Why do we like it?
The design and the comfort. We really enjoy the look of the Cascade. It is quite a sporty and modern design and is far from the boxy, boring look that one may be accustomed to with walking shoes. The bright colour is bold and eye-catching.
The comfort of this shoe is another thing that sets this apart for us. We find the upper fits very nicely. Although it is worth noting that we went for half a size bigger than we normally take. The tongue is nicely padded. The lockdown feels as secure as a boot in spite of not having an ankle collar. The midsole also is quite similar to that of a trail runner, allowing for good cushioning which your legs will be glad of when it comes to the end of your hike or for longer sections on country roads. Those who do want something a little closer to a traditional hiking boot could opt for the Cascade Mid which is a higher version of this shoe.
Who would we recommend it to?
We would recommend the Cascade to avid hikers that are looking for a comfortable trail walking/everyday shoe. Or an outdoor enthusiast that wants a good, comfortable everyday shoe for outdoor living, (i.e. walking dogs, working in the garden, hiking regularly). Helly Hansen is far better known for their clothing but we were very impressed with their footwear. It is for sure of the same calibre!
