We have been using the Salewa Mountain Trainer Mid GTX regularly as our go-to hiking boot for over a year now! Here are some of our thoughts.
The Salewa Mountain Trainer Mid is an excellent all-around hiking boot for Ireland. It is definitely stiff enough for winter hiking and can even accommodate walking crampons for more intense mountaineering. This boot would really be at home on long hikes off the beaten track. The rocker design of the midsole however lends itself to dealing well with longer trail walking. If your walk is more than 50% trails however we would recommend something with a softer midsole.
Fit is king when it comes to hiking footwear and the Salewa Moutain Trainer Mid fits very snuggly!
“I had no rubbing from day one, and unlike with other boots I did not have to mess around with the lacing or the socks I was wearing in order to stop my feet going numb” – Matthew McConnell, Outsider.
We also liked that the boot feels like a mid but has the capability of performing like a mountaineering boot thanks to the crampon shelf at the heel and the rigid sole.
This would be an excellent boot for somebody looking to increase the intensity of their hiking or is looking at doing more off-trail hiking. The rigid sole on this boot offers great support making it really good for off-trail hiking.
This boot has a Vibram outsole and a Gore-Tex membrane meaning that the boot is using industry-standard technologies for the outsole and waterproofing to ensure optimal performance! At the ankle, the Flex Collar allows comfortable and natural movement and adaptability during descents for extended comfort, even when carrying a heavy pack. Underfoot, the lightweight, compact Vibram® WTC sole delivers solid yet forgiving walkability. And Salewa’s 3F System provides flexibility, support, and a blister-free fit from day one. If you would like to know more about this boot you can view it on their website! There are also a number of Irish outdoor retailers that stock this boot so shop around!
