Looking for a new waterproof jacket that will not only protect you from the rain but that is also super light, breathable and comfortable to boot?
OMM has a reputation for making great kit. I am a huge fan of its packs – the Classic 32 is one of those items of kit that I never leave home without. And I have a feeling that the OMM Kamleika Race Jacket is going to be joining it.
The great thing about OMM is the brand’s ability to make simple gear that really works. They may not look the flashiest or come laden with an abundance of features, but everything about OMM kit is meticulously thought through and finished to a really high standard.
I have been testing the OMM Kamleika Race Jacket II for the past two months and have subjected it to some of the worst weather that the UK has to offer. Here are my thoughts:
One of the first things you will notice about the OMM Kamleika Race II Jacket is its soft and stretchy feel. Made from a four-way stretch fabric, the jacket is not restricting at all, making it an ideal choice for multi-sport fans. I have worn it kayaking, running and mountain biking and it has felt unbelievably comfortable in all of these circumstances. Velcro cuffs, a dropped rear and elasticated hem further add to its versatility and comfort.
I was slightly concerned about the lack of pit-zips when I first got my hands on the jacket. I am big fan, especially on the bike, as I often find it hard to regulate my temperature. However, I needn’t have worried – the breathability of this jacket is exceptional. With weather that can change in a matter of seconds, I have been wearing this jacket from the very start of a ride or run to the bitter end and am glad to report that I didn’t suffer that hideous ‘boil in a bag’ feeling at all. In fact, it regulated my temperature perfectly.
I am happy to report that the OMM Kamleika stood up to some of the worst rain I have ever encountered in the hills. The rain rolled off it brilliantly and it didn’t soak out at all. The storm hood is great for additional protection from the elements – it comes with a stiff peak (foam not wire) and can be adjusted as you please. The hood can be stashed away for running and biking by using the small tab and velcro feature.
The jacket is equipped with two sizeable, mesh-lined pockets that are big enough to take an OS map or any other bits and bobs you might want to run or ride with if you aren’t taking a pack with you. The pockets are protected with fully-sealed zips, as is the jacket itself.
Weighing in at just 240g, this jacket is pretty light considering the level of protection it offers. It doesn’t pack up the smallest, but you won’t even notice it in a backpack.
I really cannot fault the OMM Kamleika. It is comfortable, versatile, breathable, waterproof and light – what’s not to love?!
