EcoTrail is an international trail running race series. There are currently 10 races on the EcoTrail circuit all over the world, from Oslo to Malaysia. In 2019, the first-ever EcoTrail Wicklow took place. The event was a huge success and every year since (except 2020) thousands of runners have flocked to the town of Bray in north Wicklow for this glorious trail run in the Wicklow Mountains.
EcoTrail will offer 4 divers and stunning race routes in 2023. These include 80km, 46km, 30km and 19km.
EcoTrail 19km course: Perfect for those looking for a new challenge or those with a need for speed, the 19km route offers excellent and challenging trails straight out of Bray up Bray Head and around the Little Sugarloaf offering stunning views of the Irish Sea
More Information
EcoTrail 30km course: Ideal for those returning to EcoTrail or those looking to experiment with longer distances. The 30km course follows the shorter distance but adds an additional climb around the
EcoTrail 46km course: The perfect first ultra. The 46km route is a runnable yet challenging course. Since it is just beyond the marathon distance it is ideal for those looking to transition from big city marathons to peaceful trails. Runners will be brought around some of the nicest forest trails in Wicklow as well as getting to briefly experience the magic of the Wicklow Way and Powerscourt Waterfall.
EcoTrail 80km course: The big one! The 80km route will test the endurance of every participant no matter where in the field you are. Taking in a jaw-dropping 2470 m of climbing, the 80km route continues south along the Wicklow Way, through Ballinastoe forest before completing a lap of Vartry Reservoir. It then retraces its steps back to Bray! Definitely an epic route.
EcoTrail is one of the very few events supported by Failte Ireland, with the objective of showcase Wicklow to the international market. EcoTrail Wicklow gets plenty of overseas entries from all over the world – USA, France, Spain, Dubai – you will hear lots of different accents and languages spoken on the route. This year EcoTrail Wicklow welcomes the Winner of EcoTrail Paris Yohann Stuck as well as other elite runners from France, Austria & Slovenia!
EcoTrail Wicklow is a 3-day event! Starting on Thursday with an evening get-together, Friday bib collection, press conference, fun and music, and finally, Saturday’s races with a live broadcast, music, free non-alcoholic beer from the Wicklow Wolf brewery, and loads of fun on Bray Seafront!
At first glance, EcoTrail Wicklow may seem like a daunting challenge to some. We firmly believe, however, that it is an excellent event for entry-level runners. If you are capable of jogging 10km on the flat or completing a 3-hour hike you are well able to complete the 19km distance. A common misconception with trail running races is that participants run the whole thing. This is not the case. With the exception of a few runners at the front of the race, most people walk the majority of the climbs and jog the flats and downhills.
At the heart of EcoTrail is an environmental conscience. The clue is in the name! EcoTrail has a number of initiatives to help their event minimise its impact on the environment. The team have implemented a few action such as:
Running is a brilliantly simple sport in essence. “All you need is a pair of shoes” is a common adage that is often used when the topic of running gear is brought up. At Outsider we have extensive experience with outdoor gear and particularly trail running gear. Here are our recommendations for what to make sure you have in the cupboard. Worth Considering:
Participants are encouraged to use public transport where possible. Some of the most helpful public transport links are:
We are experiencing a glitch whereby entries will receive an error message upon submission. Do not worry the entries are still counted!
