Quench your thirst at Eight Degrees Brewing
Keen paraglider Scott Baigent and his business partner Cam Wallace brew beers inspired by the Irish outdoors at their brewery, Eight Degrees Brewing, in Mitchelstown. Their award-winning Howling Gale Pale Ale (our personal favourite) is just one of the many brews that reflect their deep connection to the outdoors.
“There is a hill at the back of the brewery. I have timed it so that I can leave the brewery, climb the hill, and paraglide back down in less than one hour!” Scott tells us as we sip on our ice-cold pints. What a way to spend your lunch break!
Scott’s brewery tour is absolutely brilliant as he guides you through the making of the beer along with the company’s sustainable practices. As an added bonus, he is also more than happy to share some tips about the local trails and hidden gems of the Ballyhoura region!
Travel back in time at Darby’s Bed Neolithic Tomb
Step into the ancient past at Darby’s Bed, a Neolithic tomb shrouded in mystery and folklore. Nestled in the heart of the Ballyhoura countryside, this remarkable site offers a glimpse into Ireland’s ancient heritage.
Built over 6,000 years ago, you will find stories carved into the stones that still stand today. According to legend, it’s also the final resting place of Aengus and his lover Étaín from Irish mythology, adding a touch of romance to its rich history.
We recommend experiencing the tomb as part of a walk around the beautifully maintained 7km loop trail starting in Galbally. The route offers rolling terrain, well-maintained trails, and a total ascent of just 190m.
Enjoy one of Ireland’s best cups of coffee
Located in the heart of Mitchelstown, The Town Coffee Company, known for its aromatic speciality coffee and welcoming atmosphere, is a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike.
Serving outrageously good coffee as well as an incredible variety of cakes, treats, and tasty breakfasts and lunches, this is the perfect place to fuel up before a big day outdoors or take refuge from foul weather with a journal and a flat white.
Take the plunge in the Keale River
Just 2km along the Keale River Trail from Ballyorgan lies one of Ballyhoura’s hidden gems: a perfect plunge pool beneath a small waterfall, surrounded by native woodlands.
The swim spot is located near the Glenroe Fairy Village, so pack a picnic to enjoy post-dip and let the kids run wild discovering the magical fairy doors scattered throughout the forest.
Reward yourself with a cosy pint at Nuala’s Pub
Nuala’s Pub in Ballyorgan is a small, traditional country pub with a warm, community spirit. The friendly bartenders are always ready to pour a perfect pint of Guinness while chatting about your day’s adventures. After a long day in the hills, the roaring fire makes it even more inviting, especially if you’ve experienced a spot of typical Irish weather!

Grab a pre-ride coffee and post-ride pint at Spruce & Willow

Then by night, this cosy café transforms into a bar with live music and a really fun atmosphere. During the winter, the wood-burning stove is always on to warm up cold hands and dry wet jackets! We never visit Ballyhoura without stopping here at least once!
Meet the local donkeys
Located in Liscarroll, just a short drive from Ballyhoura, this sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates abandoned and mistreated donkeys, making it a heartwarming destination for animal lovers and families. The gentle, calming energy of the donkeys is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Visitors can enjoy guided tours to meet the donkeys and learn about their stories. The sanctuary also features a 1km scenic walking trail, marked with green arrows, and a picnic area. The trail is well-maintained and requires no special outdoor gear, making it an accessible and enjoyable addition to your visit.
