Ballyhoura is Ireland’s largest mountain biking trail network, nestled in the breathtaking Ballyhoura Mountains on the Limerick-Cork border this purpose-built bike centre spans over 98 kilometers, and the trails cater to riders of all levels, from beginners to seasoned pros. Designed by world-class trail developers, the network winds through forested landscapes, open hills, and scenic valleys, offering a mix of climbs, descents, and flowing singletracks.
For newcomers, the Blue Greenwood Loop is perfect for getting started, while experienced riders can test their mettle on the demanding Castlepook and Mountrussell Loops. Essential Info: Navigating the Ballyhoura Trails
The starting point for all trails is the Ballyhoura Trailhead. It features a large, secure paid carpark with toilet facilities, bike wash stations and the Trailriders bike rental cabin.
Ballyhoura uses the national standard grading system, ensuring there’s a route for every skill level. There are two blue-grade routes (moderate): the 7km Greenwood Loop and the longer 17km Mountrussell Loop. For those seeking more challenging red-grade routes, there are three options: the 28km Tech Loop, the 35km Garrane Loop, and the 51km Castlepook Loop. The trails take riders through beautiful forests and open land with fantastic views of Limerick to the north and Cork to the south. All the trails form an easily navigated loop to and from the carpark ensuring you never need to take on a trail above your ability level. The extensive network of smooth gentle forest roads offer easy escapes back to the carpark if needs be!
All of the trails, regardless of the distance or difficulty you take on, will provide thrilling boardwalk sections, flowy trails through the trees, and panoramic viewpoints over the lush Ballyhoura landscape.
The trails are constantly being maintained, updated and upgraded. The final trail upgrades are expected to be completed by spring 2025!
