The Wicklow Mountains are a haven for trail runners of all abilities. With flat lakeside and coastal trails, steep rugged mountain tops and everything in between, the Wicklow Mountains have it all. The hub of the Wicklow Mountains for many is the Glendalough Valley. Less than an hour south of Dublin, this famous valley is steeped in early Christian history, geographical masterpieces and – most importantly – mile upon mile of trails to explore. This would be the location for our two-day Summer in Speedgoats trail running adventure to test out the brand-new HOKA Speedgoat 6 trail running shoe.

Our First Impressions

A few days before we were set to hit the trails we received our brand new HOKA Speedgoat 6s. The Speedgoat shoes have been a HOKA flagship trail franchise for several years and, as fans of the previous models, we were very excited to get testing this new version. Upon first inspection, the shoe looked quite similar to the previous iteration, although it seemed perhaps slightly lighter and more nimble looking. After a short try-on and jog around the house to make sure they fit, they went in our bag ready for a weekend on the trails of Wicklow.

As well as the brand-new HOKA Speedgoat 6, we had the opportunity to test some HOKA apparel. The piece that caught our eye most was the new Skyflow Jacket. This ultralight windproof layer looked like it would be perfect for chilly morning runs in the mountains.

The group assembled at The Irish Mountaineering Club Hut in the Glendasan Valley. Introductions gave way to activations as we got ready for our run.

The route we planned was 16km and took in a wide variety of terrain so we could test every aspect of the HOKA Speedgoat 6. We began by following the riverside St Kevin’s Way to the early Christian monastic settlement in Glendalough that was established by St Kevin over 1,000 years ago. The centrepiece of this settlement is the 30m-tall round tower. Built in the 10th century, the tower was likely used as a bell tower, a place of refuge during Viking raids, and a storage area for valuable religious items.

The Route

Deep conversations gave way to deep breaths as we made our way through green forests, zig-zagging our way towards the summit of Derrybawn. The trails got gradually rougher and less travelled as we neared the final steep climb. The short and steep final climb was an excellent opportunity to test out the 5mm lugs on the outsole of the Speedgoat 6. The shoe dug into the trails and propelled us to the summit where we could enjoy Derrybawn’s incredible and crowd-free views across Wicklow. We felt immersed in the mountains and grateful for the shoes that got us there.

How Was The HOKA Speedgoat?

The trails got gradually wider and busier as we descended the mountain. The gradually increasing sound of the rush of the Poulonass Waterfall indicated that we were close to the famous view of Glendalough’s Upper Lake. Rounding the corner, we were greeted by the breathtaking view of the water’s expanse People were splashing, swimming and soaking up the sun as we sped by in our Speedgoats.

After making our way back to the hut, we began to discuss our experience in the shoes. Jan Corcoran, a HOKA Racer, remarked on how she felt the shoe “feels right at home on the trails”. This makes the shoe an excellent option for people who are looking for a shoe that will give them the confidence to take to the trails. Craig, who works for HOKA, pointed out that the Speedgoat 6 is a brilliant option if you just need some extra grip for your trail runs. Erik Davila Kenny from Elvery’s, highlighted the sturdiness of the shoes, saying, “I have a bad habit of kicking rocks when I trail run and losing toenails. However, they were genuinely brilliant at protecting my feet.”

Recovery Done Right

Our gear chat was interrupted when we arrived back at the hut to refuel. We got in our mobile sauna for a sweat, punctuated by dips in the Glendasan River. It was a great opportunity to reflect on an awesome day spent on the trails. The conversation drifted from one subject to another as the evening sun shone on us.

A homemade dhal with rice and naan bread was on the menu, served with a side of amazing views courtesy of the Wicklow Mountains. A short walk to Lynhams of Laragh for a pint called a perfect day to a close.

Goodbyes

The following day conversation followed coffee as birdsong floated on the breeze. Speedgoats strewn across the hut were claimed and laced up before we hit the trails again. Tired bodies but surprisingly fresh legs made their way along St Kevin’s Way. The HOKA Skyflow jacket offered some much-needed wind protection on the exposed valley trail. A short run up and down the valley by the hut solidified our opinions about the shoes.

Does The HOKA Speedgoat Work For Wicklow?

Yes. Everyone in the group agreed that the Speedgoat 6 is perfectly suited to trail running in Wicklow, and Ireland as a whole. The outsole is aggressive enough to remain comfortable even when the terrain is very challenging. The cushiony midsole makes long, back-to-back trail days a breeze. The well-protected and durable upper keeps rocks from hurting your feet. All in all, we enjoyed getting accustomed to the HOKA Speedgoat 6s and we’re all looking forward to jumping into some training in them over the coming months.
