But who is behind this incredible festival, and what is their vision? We caught up with Pat Chawke, one of the key organizers, to uncover the story of Wander Wild and its mission to make Killarney the ultimate outdoor destination.

From Mountain Festival to Wander Wild

The festival’s roots go back to an initiative by the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, which aimed to kickstart the season and establish Killarney as the “Outdoor Capital of Ireland.” Originally launched as the Mountain Festival, the event initially attracted hardcore adventurers. However, the team soon saw an opportunity to make it more inclusive by expanding beyond high-octane mountain challenges.

Thus, Wander Wild was born—a festival that blends outdoor adventure, wellness, music, and culture. “We wanted to broaden the appeal so that whether you’re into hiking, paddleboarding, fireside chats, or guided night walks, there’s something for you,” says Chawke.

What Makes Wander Wild Special?

Unlike other outdoor festivals that focus on races or a single activity, Wander Wild is about choice. “We wanted people to create their own festival experience,” Chawke explains. “Whether you want to push your limits in the mountains or simply enjoy a weekend of gentle walks and wellness activities, you can curate your own adventure.”

This means the festival is perfect for couples, groups, or families where everyone has different interests. One person might take on a mountain masterclass while another enjoys a Wim Hof breathing workshop by the lake. It’s a festival that encourages both personal challenges and shared experiences.

The Power of Community

Wander Wild isn’t just about its stunning location—it thrives because of the people behind it. A passionate volunteer committee drives the festival, working year-round to bring it to life. “The amount of time given by volunteers is phenomenal,” Chawke says.

The festival also supports over 60 local businesses and activity providers, giving Killarney’s tourism industry a boost in the off-season. It collaborates with Kerry County Council, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Fáilte Ireland, and local schools to ensure a well-organized, sustainable event. The infectious personality of the people of Killarney and the incredible offerings & services given by the amazing local businesses is critical to the success of the festival.

100+ Activities for Every Adventurer

One of the festival’s biggest strengths is its huge variety of activities. Here’s just a taste of what festival-goers can expect:

  • For thrill-seekers: A steep mountain masterclass on the McGillycuddy Reeks
  • For nature lovers: Stand-up paddleboarding, forest bathing, and guided night walks
  • For wellness enthusiasts: Yoga, breathwork classes, and a new expanded wellness hub at Killarney House and Gardens
  • For families: A dedicated children’s programme and autism-friendly walks
  • For music lovers: Live gigs, fireside storytelling, and the famous music trail

“I can’t wait for Sean Ronayne’s talk on birdsong and the dawn chorus walk,” Chawke shares. “Other highlights for me include the lakeside sauna, fireside chats, and night walks with park rangers.”

Committed to Sustainability

As a festival rooted in nature, sustainability is at the core of Wander Wild. The organizers work closely with the guardians of Killarney National Park to ensure all events are environmentally responsible. Initiatives include:

  • A festival bus to reduce car usage
  • Partnerships with eco-friendly accommodations
  • The Killarney Coffee Cup Project, which made Killarney the first town in Ireland to phase out disposable cups
  • Educational school workshops with National Parks and Wildlife rangers

Challenges & the Future of Wander Wild

Like any major event, funding remains the festival’s biggest challenge. “We’re a not-for-profit festival run by unpaid volunteers, but we still have costs to cover,” Chawke admits. Despite this, the team has big ambitions.

“In the next five years, we want to host an international environmental sustainability and biodiversity conference in the lead-up to the festival. We want Wander Wild to be synonymous with outdoor festivals—not just in Ireland, but internationally.”

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It
