Best Event: The Blacksod Point Challenge Triathlon

The Blacksod Point Challenge Triathlon, a National Series event, is set against the breathtaking backdrop of Erris Peninsula near Belmullet in Co Mayo, Ireland, on 14 September 2024. Attracting over 350 athletes globally, this standard distance race features a 1500m swim in the sheltered Blacksod Bay, a rolling 40km bike ride, and a scenic 10km run through Falmore, offering views of Ireland’s oldest church and Achill Island. We recently chatted with Race Director Jason Mangan who was quick to highlight the stunning scenery, exceptional safety measures, and top-notch road conditions to us. Best Accommodation

There is plenty of accommodation in the area. However, Jason is encouraging people to book accommodation early as it will sell out! There’s a great buzz around this race weekend and staying close to the race centre is the best way to maximise your experience at the Blacksod Point Challenge Triathlon.

The Broadhaven Bay Hotel

The Broadhaven is the race hub throughout the weekend making it one of the best places to stay as you’ll be in the thick of the action! It also means it’s a short stumble home after the post-race meal (and after party!) and prize giving. There are a few rooms that the organizers have earmarked for racers so act fast if you want to stay in this amazing hotel.

The Erris Coast Hotel

Located a short 20-minute drive, or 17km cycle, from Belmullet town, the Erris Coast Hotel is a perfect option for families. The Erris Coast Hotel is a stylishly refurbished 31-bedroom, family-run hotel. It is also dog-friendly so the whole family can enjoy the trip!

The Talbot Hotel

The Talbot is luxurious with modern amenities and stunning sea views. The Talbot Hotel also has a fantastic restaurant with plenty of choice, perfect for fuelling up that day before your race. There are also an amazing range of activities nearby the hotel ranging from golf to angling and walking tours. Perfect post-race activities!

Western Strand Hotel

The Western Strand is the place to stay if you are an ocean lover. Located in Belmullet’s heart, the Western Strand Hotel has close links to Wavesweeper Sea Adventures. This family-run adventure company offers activities such as surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and many more, on and off the water.

Talbot Seafood Bar

The Talbot’s award-winning Seafood Bar is a great place to unwind and socialise with friends in Belmullet. It offers a relaxed dining experience with an extensive all-day menu, including options for those with gluten intolerance or vegetarian preferences. Food is served from early breakfast until 8pm daily, and guests can enjoy a cosy atmosphere with two fireplaces and occasional live music on weekends. The bar at The Talbot Hotel also offers an extensive cocktail menu, making it a good spot for an evening out with friends.

If you need a quick feed of burgers and chips after a long day in the car, nip into Cois Cuain takeaway for a quick feed. You can even order ahead so your food is ready for you.

The Cake Queen

After seven years of decorating cakes at home, Mari decided to expand her business to include a café that not only offers the beautifully decorated cakes she had become known for, but also a variety of sweet and savoury delicacies. The Cake Queen café is situated on Barrack Street, in the heart of Belmullet.

This picturesque coffee truck is worth the trip to the north part of the Erris Peninsula. Located right beside the Erris Head Loop walk, this is the perfect coffee and walk combination in the area.

Erris Head Loop Walk

Grab a coffee at Cliffside Treats and enjoy a stunning coastal loop with dramatic cliffs, sea views and diverse wildlife. This loop feels like you are at the edge of the world due to the sheer scale of the cliffs that drop into the Atlantic Ocean. Epic!

Cross Loop Walk

Cross Beach is like a portal that brings you to the stunning sandy beaches you have seen in travel magazines. If you aren’t racing the triathlon then why not take on the Erris Parkrun, which starts right beside the beach? It’s the most westerly Parkrun in Europe.

Blacksod Bay Coastal Walk

This is a gentle walk along the picturesque bay with opportunities for birdwatching. Daily guided tours and speciality tours of Blacksod Lighthouse are available from 11am – 4:30pm during the summer months (subject to change).

Best Beaches & Swims

Belmullet Tidal Pool

It’s very rare to find pools like this in Ireland and that’s why Belmullet Tidal Pool has become so iconic. Although it has become insanely popular over the past few years, many people still haven’t heard about it. It is a great place for a salt-water swim and when the weather plays ball, you’ll be treated to the most magnificent sunrises and sunsets there.

Belderra Strand

Belderra Strand, situated near the Carne Golf Links on the Wild Atlantic Way in County Mayo, offers a beautiful sandy setting for swimming enthusiasts. This stunning beach on the western side of the Belmullet Peninsula is known for its tranquil waters, making it an ideal spot for a scenic swim or just some time at the beach.
