Ireland is set to make waves on the global surfing stage as Bundoran, County Donegal, prepares to host the nation’s first-ever World Surf League (WSL) Pro Junior event. Scheduled from September 4th to 7th, 2025, this landmark competition is a highlight of the Saltwater Festival, a celebration of surf, music, and coastal culture along the Wild Atlantic Way.

The event will attract over 100 of Europe’s top under-21 male and female surfers, all competing in the European leg of the WSL Junior Tour. The main competition will take place at Bundoran’s renowned surf break, “The Peak,” with Tullan Strand and Strandhill designated as backup locations .
Pete Craig, one of the event organizers, emphasized the significance of this event for Irish surfing, stating,
“This is huge for Irish surfing and recognition of the quality of surf, the talent emerging in Ireland, and the importance of surfing along the Wild Atlantic Way.”
Rob Gunning, WSL Europe Tour Manager, echoed this sentiment, expressing excitement about bringing athletes to Ireland and showcasing Bundoran’s exceptional waves.

Beyond the main competition, the Saltwater Festival offers a diverse lineup of activities celebrating coastal life. Strandhill will host an “Expression Session,” where WSL contestants will surf alongside Ireland’s top surfers, providing a unique opportunity for local talent to engage with international professionals. Additionally, the European Surf Ski Championships will take place in Easkey, County Sligo, featuring over 100 competitors from across Europe.
Inclusivity is also a key focus of the festival. In Rossnowlagh, the Liquid Therapy Open Day will welcome surfers with special needs into the Atlantic waters, celebrating diversity and inclusivity in surfing through the efforts of the award-winning charity, Liquid Therapy.
Supported by Fáilte Ireland, Donegal County Council, and the Wild Atlantic Way, the Saltwater Festival aims to be the heartbeat of this celebration, bringing the spirit of Ireland’s west coast to life in the country’s surfing capital. For surf enthusiasts and festival-goers alike, this event promises an unforgettable experience, marking a significant milestone in Ireland’s surfing history.
