Now in its 28th year, the festival will take place from 4-6 October 2024 in the picturesque town of Kilfinane, Co. Limerick, right in the heart of the Ballyhoura Mountains.

A Legacy of Exploration

Established as Ireland’s first-ever walking festival, Ballyhoura’s hiking extravaganza has a longstanding reputation for showcasing the stunning beauty of Ballyhoura Country. With scenic trails winding through lush forests, rolling hills, and historical landmarks, it’s the perfect setting for a weekend of adventure.

This is a chance to explore a diverse range of charming walks and hikes led by experienced members of the Ballyhoura Bears Walking Club. The festival’s events are designed to accommodate people of all skill levels, whether you’re an experienced hiker seeking a challenge in a new place or a casual walker looking to take in the area’s hidden gems. The experienced local guides offer fascinating insights into the area’s rich history, flora and fauna, making each event an immersive journey.

Walking Highlights

The 2024 schedule features a diverse range of walks to suit everyone! From the Moonlight Walk to Carrighenry on Friday evening to Saturday’s Half Marathon Hike via Ballyhoura’s Highest Peaks, the festival offers exciting opportunities for exploration. For early risers, the Dawn Chorus Sunrise Walk on Saturday promises breathtaking views and a serene start to the day. Families and beginners can enjoy more leisurely options, such as the Kilcruaig Walk or Sunday’s Yoga Walk Experience in Kilfinane Village, offering a calming blend of movement and mindfulness in nature.

Craic By Day, Ceol By Night

For the third year, the Ballyhoura Walking Festival will collaborate with the Joyce Brothers Music Festival, adding a rich cultural dimension to the event. This sister festival offers an array of traditional Irish music, song and dance performances throughout the weekend.

The fusion of music and nature at this festival creates a truly unique atmosphere, blending the rhythms of the natural landscape with the melodies of the region’s cultural heritage.
