At €80 it is the best value waterproof jacket we’ve ever seen. All the other jackets in this price bracket that we have seen or tested or not nearly as durable comfortable or reliable.

The most recent iteration of this long line of trail crushers, the Speedgoat 6 hit the shelves this year. Is it the GOAT of the trails? Possibly. One thing is for sure though. The Speedgoat 6 is not a show pony, this shoe is a workhorse.

Mammut Sapuen High GTX

A lightweight, high-cut mountain boot that sticks to any surface. The Sapuen High GTX provides ample protection for off-piste hiking while remaining lightweight underfoot. One feature we were particularly impressed by was the Vibram Flextron II outsole. Many of the boots that we have tested falter when it comes to high-quality grip on varied terrain, not the Sapuen. This boot sticks to any surface and provides confident traction on the roughest ground. If everybody was wearing this boot mountain rescue calls would go down significantly.

HOKA Zinal 2

We think that the Zinal 2 is a next-generation racer from HOKA, the combination of cushion, weight and grip puts it near the top of all the shoes we have tested. We would recommend the Zinal 2 to people who want a “go-faster” shoe for Irish races shorter than 30km. If you are in the market for a “go-longer” race day shoe we would recommend considering the HOKA Tecton X3.

You sit quite low in the chair which is worth bearing in mind for those who struggle with my mobility.
