Ireland’s first national surf centre will be coming to Sligo by 2022.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced that €1 million in funding will be allocated to the construction and organization of Ireland’s first national surf centre. The funding will go towards building a facility that will serve as a National Centre of Excellence for Surfing in Ireland and will serve as a focal point for tourists and locals who want to catch some waves along the Wild Atlantic Way.

The project, which has also been given €615,000 in funding under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund, will be located on the beach promenade in Strandhill.

According to Fáilte Ireland, “the project will be situated at the Four Winds site on Strandhill promenade and the 500sq.m centre and will provide a modern fit-for-purpose centre with sufficient changing, showering and toilet facilities, board and locker storage, gym, off-beach training facility and multi-function meeting room.”

Fáilte Ireland has added that the development of this new centre will enhance the tourism potential of the area, and An Taoiseach has delighted in the funding, praising the decision and speculating on its positive outcomes for the community.

“Strandhill is already a very popular destination, thanks to its wonderful location, great beaches and of course its secret weapon – the waves that have become so popular with locals and visitors alike,” he said. “I am delighted to be announcing this significant funding for the development of the new Strandhill Surf Centre, which I have no doubt will make this coastal town even more popular in the years ahead.”
