A mad new event, the Sand Yacht Championships, has come to our shores and we are loving it!

The European Sand Yacht Championships 2017 has come to Ireland for the first time in almost 35 years. Racing began on Monday 11 September on the strand between Bettystown and Laytown, County Meath, and is continuing all week until Friday, so get yourself to Meath ASAP.

You will see it all, from smaller ‘mini yachts’ that are agile and can fit in the boot of your car, to larger, faster yachts like the Standart. Over 110 competitors from 16 countries, with ages ranging from 16 to 70 will be there and you might catch a glimpse of the SB20 sailing champion Graeme Grant.

Ireland is represented by not one but two father and son teams; Vincent Clarke and son Owen from Dublin are part of the Irish Standart Team and Patrick Letters and son Martin from Ballymena are on the Irish Miniyacht Team and are both seasoned European land sailing event participants.

There is still time to get yourself down there and get in on all the action!
