"Tony Mangan"

In 1997, Tony Mangan read a book that would change his life forever - Full Tilt? Ireland to India with a Bicycle by Dervla Murphy. Inspired by the book, Tony made his way around the world by bike in 1998.

While this kick-started a love of travelling, it was his impulsive decision to run a marathon 25 years ago that shaped him in to the man he is today. With just one long run under his belt, Tony completed the marathon in three hours and nine minutes. He then went on to become world champion in the 48-hour indoor championships, running a staggering 426km.

Tony never let go of his dream that someday he would run around the world. He is currently in the process of realising that dream having set off in October 2010 to run 55,000km over a four-year period. When he finishes he will have run a marathon a day for more than 1,000 days, battling everything from extreme blizzards to searing heat, and all the while pushing his jogging stroller. Named Nirvana, it is home to all of his supplies including food and water.

Yourself in three words?

Determined, stubborn, thick!

What possessed you to run around the world?

To be honest, my training was going well, I fed my dream by reading travel books, I was feeding a monster and I just thought why not.

Strangest thing that has happened on your travels?

I took a break in a windstorm in Patagonia. I was eating an apple and it blew out of my mouth. In Patagonia it is very difficult to put up a tent so I tended to camp in underground tunnels that are used for flash floods. I was sitting there under the road when a gust of wind came through the tunnel and knocked my stroller back on top of me. I couldn’t believe it, there I was under the road and I still couldn’t get away from the wind.

Do you ever feel like giving up?

Many times but it’s only a temporary thing. This is my dream. I have got so far now it is probably quicker to keep on going. This is a monster I have to put to bed.

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

Run on water!

If you had to eat a person in a survival situation would you, who would it be?

I have a list of about three or four people. The run has been giving me a lot of time to think.

Would you rather relive a moment of your past or get a glimpse of your future?

I don’t believe we should live in the past so I think the future. I dream about the moment I cross the finish line in the Dublin Marathon at 2.05pm on 27 October 2014.

Do you have any nicknames?

Forest Gump!

Who would you most like to have a pint with (dead or alive)?

Sir Edmond Hillary.

Favourite album?

U2 Joshua Tree.

Favourite song?

Walk On.
